Senior Analyst, Retirement Markets 

Position Overview:

This Senior Analyst position is based in the Boston Office in the Retirement practice and reports to the Director, Retirement. The practice focuses on trends related to the Retirement markets, including:

  • Trends in the 401(k), 403(b), 457 and other defined contribution markets
  • Defined contribution investment only (DCIO) strategies for asset managers, including target-date funds
  • Strategies in the recordkeeper market, including participant engagement and service offerings
  • Trends in personal retirement planning, including the IRA market and retirement income

Cerulli is seeking a candidate with experience related to the retirement markets, including both defined contribution and personal retirement planning.

Successful candidates for this position are analytical and quantitatively-oriented, exhibit strong writing skills, work autonomously, are adaptable and comfortable multi-tasking, and seek to build deep industry expertise. They are also hardworking, persistent, and enthusiastic individuals with a passion for financial services industry research and analysis.

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Senior Analyst has extensive analysis, data modeling, and writing responsibilities. The position contributes to research initiatives for three annual research reports and a quarterly periodical. The Senior Analyst will:

  • Author research report content related to emerging industry trends
  • Build quantitative surveys and models, including survey design, data gathering, data modeling and analysis, and exhibit creation
  • Conduct ongoing qualitative research related to report themes
  • Manage report projects and deadlines
  • Solicit and interview senior executives about emerging industry trends
  • Manage partnerships with industry trade associations and publications
  • Assist account managers with client inquiries related to the practice’s research content

The position offers significant industry exposure, including interactions with senior executives throughout the industry, coverage in industry publications, and potentially presenting at conferences and events.

Qualifications:

  • 5 to 8 years of experience in financial services, preferably related to the retirement industry
  • Knowledge of defined contribution plans and investments
  • Exposure to personal retirement planning, including retirement income
  • Superior writing skills
  • Aptitude for synthesizing research, identifying trends, and providing commentary on relevant industry issues
  • Strong attention to detail and emphasis on accuracy
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Proficient in Excel; able to manipulate, and analyze sizeable amounts of data; experience with SPSS is a plus
  • Ability to cultivate a network of industry contacts for research purposes
  • College degree; completion of, or progress toward, CIMA® or CFA® is a plus

Data Analyst, Wealth Management 

Position Overview:

The Quantitative Research Analyst position works within the Wealth Management practice, reports to the Director, Wealth Management and is based in Cerulli’s Boston office.

This is a newly created position and is ideal for someone who is proficient in IBM SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The role requires being analytical, quantitatively-focused, persistent, and highly detail-oriented. There will be extensive data analysis and data modeling responsibilities. Examples include managing large proprietary SPSS broker/dealer (B/D) and financial advisor survey databases. The position will also contribute to the practice’s qualitative research as needed and selectively support other quantitative research needs, across the firm, as it pertains to custom and consulting projects.

The candidate must be able to work autonomously, be comfortable with multi-tasking, and adaptative to meet multiple strict deadlines.

Cerulli’s Wealth Management practice focuses on trends related to financial advisors and related intermediaries, including:

  • In-depth competitive analysis and qualitative coverage of the largest B/Ds and registered investment advisor (RIA) custodians
  • Needs, challenges, risks, and opportunities facing financial advisors
  • Distribution strategies for retail asset management products sold through financial advisors
  • Strategy for wholesaling teams, including structure, compensation, and resource allocation
  • Competitive dynamics underlying marketshare shifts across wirehouse, RIA, independent B/D, private bank, family office, and other advisor affiliation models

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Function as the highly specialized analytic expert within the Wealth Management practice
  • Manage multiple data modeling projects in both SPSS and Excel and meet deadlines
  • Maintain and improve existing SPSS databases, Excel workbooks, processes, and timelines
  • Continuously work to innovate new databases, syntax, data models, and outputs
  • Create new SPSS syntax to generate, edit, and proof data to create tables, graphs, and dashboards
  • Fully document and update all processes
  • Support the quantitative needs of strategic consulting and custom research engagements
  • Assist account managers with client inquiries related to the practice’s research and processes
  • Assist in building quantitative surveys, including survey design, data gathering, data modeling, analysis, and outputs
  • Help manage any necessary partnerships with industry trade associations or publications that provide relevant datapoints

The position offers significant industry exposure, including collaboration with Cerulli’s practice leaders, interactions with senior industry executives, and potentially presenting at conferences and events.

Qualifications:

  • Four to six years of quantitative research experience, specifically with expert-level IBM SPSS and Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience writing SPSS syntax and Excel macros
  • Experience in financial services related to retail wealth and/or asset management trends
  • Aptitude for synthesizing research, identifying trends, and providing commentary on relevant industry issues
  • High attention to detail and emphasis on accuracy is must
  • Ability to multi-task and meet multiple deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of portfolio construction trends with exposure to financial advisors and their investment decision-making processes is a plus
  • College degree required; completion of, or progress toward, Masters is a plus
